Irene Mukii Ng’endo has officially stepped down as Miss Universe Kenya, marking the end of her tenure with a heartfelt statement of gratitude and purpose. Announcing her decision on November 29, 2024, Mukii expressed her commitment to transformational leadership and community service through her platform, Inspirene Revolution.
“To all of you who have shown support, thank you,” Mukii stated. “The focus remains transformational leadership to empower underserved and marginalized communities. After careful consideration, I have decided to send in my termination notice to the Miss Universe Kenya Organization. I will continue working together for the good of our people.”
This resignation comes months after Mukii represented Kenya at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant in Mexico, where she achieved recognition as one of the top seven contestants from Africa and Oceania. Despite her strong showing, she faced criticism, particularly concerning her costume choices during the competition.
Mukii’s pageantry journey began long before her Miss Universe Kenya crown. In 2020, she earned the title of Miss Grand Kenya and competed in the Miss Grand International pageant in Bangkok, where she secured a spot in the Top 20. On August 16, 2024, she was crowned Miss Universe Kenya at a dazzling ceremony at the Argyle Grand Hotel in Nairobi, triumphing over 15 finalists.

At the Miss Universe 2024 pageant, Mukii celebrated Kenyan culture by wearing a costume adorned with images of renowned Kenyan athletes, symbolizing the nation’s legacy in long-distance running. In an Instagram post, she explained the cultural significance of her outfit, writing:
“This costume showcases our global legacy of marathon greatness and our rich running culture.”
She also rallied Kenyans to support her during the finals, emphasizing the importance of national pride and unity. “Let’s show the world the unbreakable spirit of Kenya,” she urged.
While Mukii’s cultural representation won admiration, it also drew criticism. Her resignation follows these mixed reviews, though she remains resolute in her mission to inspire change.
