In a historic political comeback, Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, has secured victory in the presidential election, as his rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference from his residence, Bawumia confirmed Mahama’s win, stating that his own party’s internal data indicated a decisive victory for Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Bawumia emphasized that his concession was aimed at reducing tensions and maintaining Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic transitions.
“I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” he said. “The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
The vice president also acknowledged the significance of the results for Ghana’s political and economic stability, adding, “It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana.”

In addition to the presidency, Mahama’s NDC achieved a sweeping victory in the parliamentary election. Bawumia confirmed that while some seats were still being collated, the remaining results were unlikely to alter the overall outcome.
Despite the peaceful concession, reports of scuffles emerged from local constituency centres as polling station results continued to arrive. Observers had previously expressed concern about the potential for unrest, but Bawumia’s early concession helped to defuse the situation.
This victory marks Mahama’s return to power after losing the presidency in 2016. His campaign focused on addressing economic challenges, unemployment, and corruption, resonating with voters eager for change.
Ghana, celebrated as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, now prepares for another transition, solidifying its reputation for peaceful electoral processes. Mahama’s victory signals a new chapter, as citizens and investors alike anticipate how his administration will tackle the pressing issues facing the nation.
