Tragedy struck the United States Navy as Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola, a Nigerian-born officer, lost his life after falling overboard while on duty in the Red Sea.
Aregbesola, assigned to the “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74, was deployed with a detachment aboard USS Mason (DDG 87) operating in the US 5th Fleet since November. The US Navy confirmed his untimely demise in a statement issued on Saturday.
“Petty Officer Aregbesola fully embodied the selfless character and thoughtful warrior spirit of the United States Navy Sailor,” expressed Cmdr. Eric Kohut, commanding officer of HSM-74, paying tribute to Aregbesola’s dedication and service.

The Navy praised Aregbesola’s outstanding performance prior to and during deployment, emphasizing his exemplary conduct and contributions to the ship/air team. His sudden loss has deeply impacted his colleagues, with condolences extended to his family and loved ones.
Hailing from Florida, Aregbesola joined the Navy in July 2020, reporting to HSM-74 in December of the same year. His journey from unemployment to service in the U.S. Navy resonated with many, as he shared his experience on social media.
“I was jobless for so many years, my country of birth (Nigeria, now renounced) failed me, but the US Navy saw potential in me and made me a fine ass sailor, working on jet engines,” Aregbesola wrote on Twitter, reflecting on his journey of resilience and opportunity.
As the Navy mourns the loss of Aregbesola, his legacy of service and perseverance serves as a testament to the values upheld by the men and women in uniform, both in the United States and across the globe.
