In a significant boost for global democratic leadership, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Nigerian Minister of Education and ex-Vice President for the World Bank’s Africa Region, has been named an advisor to the Club de Madrid — the world’s largest forum of former democratic presidents and prime ministers.
The Club de Madrid officially announced the appointment on its X (formerly Twitter) platform, expressing gratitude for Dr. Ezekwesili’s acceptance and highlighting her exceptional leadership and dedication to democratic values. The post read, “On behalf of all of us, thank you @obyezeks for joining @ClubdeMadrid. Your leadership, vision, and commitment to democratic values are deeply appreciated. We are honoured to count on your voice as we work to advance inclusive democracy worldwide.”
Responding warmly on her own X handle, Dr. Ezekwesili described the appointment as a privilege: “I accepted the invitation to become an advisor to @ClubdeMadrid – the world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, who leverage their individual and collective leadership experience and global reach to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world.”
She further acknowledged the challenging nature of today’s global landscape, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership in tackling worldwide issues. “As our global context becomes even more complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to global public ‘bads.’ I therefore deeply appreciate how these former leaders of democracies around the world continue to dedicate themselves to helping solve our global challenges and amplify opportunities for cooperation. Delighted to support,” Ezekwesili shared.

Since its founding in 2001 and based in Madrid, Spain, the Club de Madrid has grown to include over 100 former heads of state and government from more than 70 countries. These seasoned leaders generously offer their expertise without compensation, aiming to guide current political leaders, bolster civil society, and support international institutions.
The Club’s mission is clear: strengthen democratic institutions, resolve political conflicts, and promote good governance worldwide. Its activities include high-profile events like the Annual Policy Dialogues and Policy Labs, where pressing international topics are debated and dissected. Earlier this year, in April 2025, the Club hosted a Policy Dialogue on reforming global financial governance to better align with shared democratic principles.
Dr. Ezekwesili’s inclusion in this elite circle is poised to deepen the Club’s impact. Her vast experience — including her tenure as World Bank Vice President for Africa beginning in 2007 and her influential role as Nigeria’s Education Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo — uniquely positions her to contribute meaningfully to the Club’s goals.
Her distinguished career has been recognized nationally and internationally; in 2006, she was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in Nigeria, underscoring her commitment to public service and national development.
With Dr. Ezekwesili on board, the Club de Madrid looks set to amplify its efforts in nurturing resilient, inclusive democracies across the globe — a mission more urgent than ever in today’s complex political environment.
