In an effort to strengthen bilateral relations and boost economic ties, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that Nigeria’s tourists and business leaders can now apply for visas to South Africa with a significantly simplified process. The new visa policy was revealed during the opening of the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, where Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also attended.

The announcement is expected to significantly benefit Nigerian tourists and business professionals, making travel between the two countries more accessible and efficient. One of the key highlights of the new policy is the introduction of five-year multiple-entry visas for eligible Nigerian businesspeople, allowing them greater flexibility in conducting business in South Africa.

“Our simplified visa process is a crucial step in making South Africa more accessible to Nigerian entrepreneurs and tourists. For those who qualify, we are offering a five-year multiple-entry visa,” President Ramaphosa said, emphasizing the importance of facilitating easier travel for those looking to engage in business and tourism.

President Ramaphosa also underscored the critical role Nigeria plays in South Africa’s economic landscape. The two countries have long shared strong economic ties, with numerous South African businesses operating in Nigeria and vice versa. Ramaphosa emphasized that these partnerships have laid the groundwork for continued economic growth, and the visa process changes were designed to further enhance these connections.

He acknowledged the challenges that businesses face in both countries but expressed optimism that the new visa policy would help eliminate some of the barriers to trade and investment. “Our relationship is based on strong foundations of friendship and mutual respect. As we celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations, we are committed to removing obstacles that hinder business and investment,” he stated.South Africa Eases Visa Requirements for Nigerian Tourists and Business Leaders

In his speech, Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the future of the Nigeria-South Africa relationship, particularly in terms of economic cooperation. He highlighted the importance of continuing reforms in Nigeria, which are aimed at improving the business environment and attracting more foreign investments.

“We need to continue to remove the remaining barriers to investment,” he said. “The Nigerian government’s efforts to reform its business environment will offer greater assurance to investors, including those from South Africa.”

The new visa process is seen as a significant step forward in promoting stronger ties between the two nations, opening doors for greater tourism, business opportunities, and mutual growth. As both countries strive to deepen their economic cooperation, the hope is that this visa reform will contribute to the broader goal of fostering a more prosperous and interconnected African continent.

In closing, Ramaphosa expressed hope that the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria would continue to thrive, with more Nigerian companies expanding operations in South Africa and vice versa. This new visa policy is a concrete step toward making that vision a reality.
