Trace Awards 2025: Celebrating Africa’s Musical Excellence in Zanzibar

Zanzibar came alive on February 26 as the 2025 edition of the Trace Awards honored the brightest stars in African music. The event, which attracted top artists, producers, and industry heavyweights, highlighted the continent’s growing influence on the global music scene. Afrobeats, amapiano, and other African genres took center stage, with electrifying performances and well-deserved accolades.

South African duo Titom & Yuppe scored one of the night’s biggest honors, winning Song of the Year for their infectious hit Tshwala Bam, a track that took dance floors by storm. Meanwhile, Nigerian sensation Rema continued his winning streak, clinching Album of the Year for Heis, a project that blends Afrobeats with international influences. Rema also took home Best Male Artist, further solidifying his status as a leading figure in African music.

In the Best Collaboration category, Ivorian artists Tam Sir & Team Paiya won for their electrifying track Coup du Marteau, while celebrated director Meji Alabi earned Best Music Video for his creative vision in Rema’s DND. The Trace Awards also spotlighted excellence across different African regions and genres. Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz took home Best Global African Artist, continuing his legacy as one of Africa’s biggest global exports. Ivorian rapper Didi B was named Best Hip Hop Artist, showcasing his lyrical prowess.

In regional categories, Josey of Ivory Coast was named Best French-Speaking Artist, while Nigeria’s Ayra Starr dominated West Africa with her Best Western Africa Anglophone Artist win. Southern Africa’s Tyler ICU continued his amapiano reign with a well-earned win, while Kenya’s Bien stood out as Best East African Artist.
