American rapper Macklemore has made a bold political statement by canceling his upcoming show in Dubai, scheduled for October, as a protest against the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) alleged support for the Sudanese paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has been a key player in the ongoing civil war in Sudan, and the UAE’s reported involvement in arming and funding the group has drawn sharp criticism.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, Macklemore expressed his decision to stand in solidarity with Sudanese activists who have been raising awareness about the devastating impact of the conflict. “The situation in Sudan is urgent and horrifying, yet it’s being largely ignored on a global scale,” the Grammy-winning artist wrote. “I’m taking this step following the lead of Sudanese organizers who are fighting to be heard. Until the UAE stops arming and funding the RSF, I cannot perform there.”
Macklemore’s decision is significant given Dubai’s status as a major global entertainment hub that regularly attracts international artists and hosts large-scale events. Publicly canceling a performance due to political reasons is rare, making Macklemore’s stance particularly noteworthy.
The UAE’s alleged role in the Sudan conflict has been a point of contention. While Sudan’s army has openly criticized the UAE for supporting the RSF, the Emirati government denies these claims. However, reports from United Nations experts have lent credibility to these allegations, with the issue being debated at the UN Security Council earlier this year.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, stems from a power struggle between the army and the RSF, who were once allies following a coup. Despite ongoing ceasefire talks in Switzerland, the fighting persists, with half of Sudan’s population now facing severe food shortages.
Macklemore also linked his decision to a broader reflection on the ethics of his work as an artist. He pointed to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, which has prompted him to rethink how he uses his platform and earns income. “If I accept the money knowing it doesn’t align with my values, how am I different from the politicians I’ve been protesting against?” he questioned, urging other artists set to perform in Dubai to reconsider their decisions.
The rapper has previously used his music for activism, notably releasing “Hind’s Hall” in May, a protest anthem in support of pro-Palestinian students occupying university campuses in response to the Gaza conflict.
Macklemore’s actions highlight the growing intersection between music, activism, and global politics, with artists increasingly using their influence to take a stand on critical humanitarian issues.
