Gambian President Adama Barrow said on Wednesday that Gambian Vice President Badara Alieu Joof had died in India from a small illness.
The 65-year-old politician was appointed vice president of the West African country in 2022. Previously, he served as Minister of Education from 2017 to 2022.
Barrow said on Twitter that Joof had died “after a short illness” without giving further details, including his time of death.
The vice president left The Gambia about three weeks ago to receive medical treatment and had not been seen in public for months before the trip.
He became the fourth MP to serve under Barrow since his historic 2016 victory over former strongman Yahya Jammeh and to be sworn in the following year, and the second since the president was re-elected in 2021.

The late Vice President previously worked for the Gambian civil service and later the World Bank as an education specialist for West and Central Africa and applied his experience there to his time as Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.
