DJ Cuppy, described as “one of Africa’s leading DJs” and a globally recognized philanthropist from Nigeria, has announced the creation of the Cuppy Africa Scholars Fund.

The fund, totaling £100,000, will enable African PhD students at Oxford University to access funding for unexpected and urgent financial needs. It will also allow scientists to “carry out activities that ensure the pursuit of excellence”.

Cuppy herself graduated from Oxford in 2022 with an MA in African Studies. She said: “I have seen first hand the differences in college life experiences for students from my continent of Africa to seek the education they deserve.”

The fund will support the previously established Africa Oxford (AfOx) initiative, which is working university-wide to “make engagement with Africa a strategic priority for Oxford”.

The initiative enables more African students to pursue postgraduate studies at the university, and the donation will allow it to “meet the needs of the most vulnerable students,” including students with any type of disability or care responsibilities.

Dr. Anne McKenna, Co-Director of AfOx, stated: “We are delighted that Cuppy is so generous in supporting African postgraduates here in Oxford.

We both share the experience of being African postgraduates at Oxford and it is a great honor for AfOx to partner with Cuppy to address some of the unique challenges African students may encounter during their time at Oxford around the world.”
