Nigeria has emerged as the second-best country in Africa for mental well-being, according to the latest findings from the Global Mind Project’s fourth annual ‘Mental State of the World’ report released in March 2024. The report, conducted by Sapien Labs, highlights Tanzania as securing the highest point for mental well-being, with Nigeria surpassing Zimbabwe in the rankings.

Amid Nigeria’s ranking as a frontrunner in mental well-being on the continent, the report’s release coincides with the country grappling with economic challenges exacerbated by factors such as the removal of subsidy on petrol and the unification of exchange rate windows. These policy decisions, announced by President Bola Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, have contributed to increased hardships and strains on the populace.
Despite these challenges, Nigeria’s commendable standing in mental health underscores the resilience and coping mechanisms exhibited by its citizens. The findings serve as a testament to the importance of addressing mental health as an integral component of overall well-being, particularly in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
As the nation navigates through ongoing economic reforms and strives to bolster mental health support systems, the insights provided by the Global Mind Project’s report offer valuable guidance for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and communities alike. Prioritizing mental well-being remains essential in fostering a resilient and thriving society in Nigeria and beyond.
