Unseasonably severe snowstorms struck South Africa’s coastal regions over the weekend, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and the temporary closure of several major highways. The unexpected winter blast, highly unusual for this time of year, paralyzed traffic and disrupted daily life across the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
The two fatalities were attributed to hypothermia after individuals became stranded in their vehicles due to the heavy snowfall on the N3 highway, a key route leading to Durban, one of South Africa’s largest coastal cities. Among the victims was a 39-year-old woman who had been traveling in a minibus that became immobilized in the storm.
Local authorities are concerned that the aftermath of the snowstorms could lead to further complications. As temperatures rise, officials warn that melting snow could cause widespread flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Farmers are also reeling from the damage, as many had their crops buried under snow for two days, threatening their livelihoods.

Emergency response teams have been working tirelessly to assist stranded motorists. Dozens of trucks and smaller vehicles have been towed out of snowdrifts, and rescue workers have been distributing food and warm beverages to those trapped for hours in freezing conditions.
Despite the efforts to clear major roads, authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution on cleared routes, as conditions remain hazardous.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the impact of the storm extended beyond the roadways. Provincial schools were ordered to close, and local government officials, such as Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the provincial minister for cooperative governance, issued warnings about the potential for flooding along the Tugela River. Buthelezi emphasized the importance of safety, urging parents to keep their children away from unguarded rivers and dams during this volatile period.
As South Africa faces the consequences of these unexpected snowstorms, the focus remains on recovery and ensuring the safety of those still in harm’s way.
