Angela Bassett, a Hollywood legend known for her powerful performances on screen, has achieved yet another milestone in her career. On Saturday night, Bassett took home her very first Emmy Award for her narration in the National Geographic documentary series Queens. This moment marks a long-awaited win for the two-time Oscar nominee, adding an Emmy to her extensive list of accolades.

Bassett’s win came during the first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, a precursor to the main Emmy event, which celebrates the behind-the-scenes artistry of television. Unlike many previous winners in the narration category—such as Barack Obama, who won last year—Bassett was present to accept the award herself. Clearly emotional, she expressed her gratitude while holding the trophy.

“Oh my god, wow, my first Emmy,” Bassett exclaimed. “I couldn’t be more thrilled and more grateful.”

Her connection to the Queens documentary, which focuses on the strength and resilience of female-led animal species, was deeply personal. Backstage, Bassett revealed that it was the all-female production team behind the project that initially attracted her to the role. “It just touched my heart,” she explained. “So I said yes.”

This Emmy win adds to what has already been an extraordinary year for Bassett. Earlier in 2024, she received an honorary Academy Award, further solidifying her place as one of the most respected talents in the entertainment industry. Known for her portrayals of strong women, from Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It to her role in Black Panther, Bassett continues to be a trailblazer in her field.

As a veteran actress who has graced both the big and small screens, this Emmy signifies a crowning achievement in Bassett’s illustrious career. It also serves as a testament to the power of representation in storytelling, with her involvement in a female-driven production adding even more significance to the win.

Bassett’s triumph was just one of many celebrated moments at the Creative Arts Emmys. However, her win, alongside her heartfelt speech, highlighted the night’s focus on artistry and dedication to craft. As she stepped off stage, her joy and gratitude were palpable, reflecting a career full of talent, resilience, and hard-earned success.
