Google Announces $1.5 Million Support for Nigerian Founders and AI Development

Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant boost to Nigeria’s tech and entrepreneurial landscape, Google has committed over $1.5 million (N2.8 billion) to support Nigerian founders and entrepreneurs, focusing on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) talent and digital skills. This funding, announced today, is part of Google.org’s wider $5.8 million initiative to foster digital skills across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE) confirmed that the grant will fund Data Science Nigeria’s AI talent development programs in collaboration with the Ministry’s initiatives to upskill Nigeria’s youth and address unemployment. Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, highlighted the partnership’s potential impact on Nigeria’s digital transformation. “This support from Google shows our commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in AI innovation,” Tijani remarked. “By leveraging Google’s resources, we are opening doors for Nigerians to gain skills that will enable them to thrive in the global digital landscape.”Google Announces $1.5 Million Support for Nigerian Founders and AI Development

Matt Brittin, President of Google for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, reinforced Google’s dedication to Africa’s innovation. “Across Africa, entrepreneurs are using technology to tackle major social challenges,” he said. “Google is committed to supporting these innovators, enhancing their reach, and ensuring more people benefit from the digital economy. This partnership is part of that ongoing mission.”

In alignment with these goals, Google and the Ministry also revealed the recipients of the AI Fund, launched by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) in collaboration with Google. Each chosen startup will receive ₦100 million and up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits. This package provides access to Google’s AI tools, mentorship from experts, and an opportunity to connect with a global network of industry leaders.

This initiative is expected to equip Nigerian startups with the resources to expand their innovations and drive Nigeria’s presence in the global tech arena.
