John Dumelo Nominated as Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture

Accra, Ghana – Ghanaian actor-turned-politician, John Kofi Setor Dumelo, has been nominated as the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture by President John Dramani Mahama. The nomination underscores Dumelo’s rising political influence and the government’s commitment to integrating diverse expertise in national development.

Dumelo, who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has been vocal about the need for strategic investments in agriculture. His new role is expected to inject fresh ideas into the sector, particularly in food security and agribusiness, to enhance Ghana’s agricultural sustainability.

Even before his nomination, Dumelo had been actively engaging in agricultural discussions. Ahead of the 2024 general elections, he publicly urged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture—then under Bryan Acheampong—to prioritize investments in irrigation systems.

“We can’t keep on giving millions of dollars to our neighbouring farmers to import their tomatoes and onions while we (Ghanaian farmers) have the capacity to cultivate the same crops. Irrigation is the way forward,” Dumelo stated.Dumelo
