In a historic ceremony on Monday, Liberia swore in Joseph Boakai as its new president, making the 79-year-old the country’s oldest leader. Boakai, who secured a narrow victory in the November 2023 election, vowed to unite the nation and tackle its economic challenges.
Addressing citizens and foreign dignitaries in Monrovia, Boakai emphasized the importance of national unity, stating, “Only united people can build a nation. And where do we plan to take Liberia in the next six years? We must refocus our political energy.” His priorities include improving adherence to the rule of law, combating corruption, and renewing the hope of citizens.

However, the inauguration ceremony took an unexpected turn when President Boakai, adorned in traditional Liberian attire, showed signs of physical distress during his speech. The event concluded abruptly as officials escorted him away from the podium after unsuccessful attempts to continue speaking.
In response to concerns, a spokesperson for Boakai’s political party attributed the incident to heat-related discomfort, insisting it was not indicative of any underlying health issues. Boakai himself has dismissed worries about his age, emphasizing the experience and achievements he brings to the presidency.
Boakai’s victory in a tight run-off election marked the defeat of Liberia’s youngest-ever president, George Weah. Weah’s popularity dwindled toward the end of his first six-year term, with critics accusing him of failing to fulfill promises to revive the economy, eradicate corruption, and ensure justice for victims of Liberia’s civil wars from 1989 to 2003.
As Boakai assumes office, the nation watches closely, hopeful for the positive changes he has pledged, while questions linger about the impact of his age on his ability to lead effectively.
