The London Stock Exchange Group Plc (LSEG) has fired an employee after a viral video surfaced showing the individual and a group of men following and questioning a Black teenager in his own Florida neighborhood. The encounter, which took place in Sarasota after Hurricane Milton, has ignited widespread outrage, drawing attention to issues of racial profiling and harassment.

The incident was captured by the teen, and the footage was later shared by his mother, Whitney Portela, on Facebook. The video, which has amassed over five million views, shows several White men, including the now-fired LSEG employee, following the boy as he walked through his neighborhood.

In the footage, the men can be heard questioning whether the teen lived in the area, despite his clear insistence that he did. One man is even seen reaching into a car and attempting to approach the teen before being restrained by another.

LSEG identified the terminated employee as Stephen Carega. In a statement, the company explained that Carega was initially suspended as part of an internal investigation after they became aware of the “concerning video.” The company stated that they have since “severed ties” with him, upholding their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on racism, discrimination, and harassment. “We expect the conduct of our employees to meet a high standard,” the company added.London Stock Exchange Group Fires White Employee For Racially Profiling and Threatening Young Black Boy Viral Video

Portela, the teen’s mother, expressed her distress over the incident in a heartfelt Facebook post. She described it as an example of racial profiling and harassment. “Even after telling these men he lives here, they weren’t satisfied with his answer and continued to harass him,” she wrote. She revealed that the encounter lasted over ten minutes, adding, “I am so happy he recorded every moment, and thankful my child is still here.”

Portela also spoke about how the incident brought back painful memories of the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, a tragic case that has become a symbol of racial injustice. “I do not want to live in a community that does not welcome me and my children because of the color of our skin,” she said, noting the mental toll the situation has taken on her.

The video shows the teen calmly asserting his right to walk through his neighborhood, while the men continuously press him with questions about his residence. At one point, one of the men aggressively approaches him, before being pulled back by another member of the group.

Following the viral spread of the video, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office announced it has launched an investigation into the incident. The teen can be seen in a separate video reporting the men to a deputy, asking whether their behavior constitutes harassment.

This troubling episode has sparked widespread debate about racial profiling and the ongoing challenges faced by people of color in everyday situations. Many viewers of the viral video expressed their support for the teen and his family, condemning the behavior of the men involved.

Portela urged the public to continue amplifying her story, saying, “This isn’t fair, and it doesn’t feel good. Many people have lost their lives behind ignorant idiots like this.” She also used the hashtags #BlackLivesMatter and #BLM to emphasize the broader context of racial inequality that continues to persist in the U.S.

As the investigation unfolds, many are calling for stronger measures to address racial profiling and ensure that incidents like this do not continue to happen.
