The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has officially announced that incumbent President Yoweri Museveni will be the party’s flag bearer in the upcoming 2026 Presidential Elections. The declaration was made during a celebratory event marking NRM Day in Serere District over the weekend.

Todwong expressed confidence in President Museveni’s leadership, stating, “He will be our flag bearer come 2026, and he is ready to serve the country.” According to Todwong, Museveni’s tenure has been marked by ensuring peace and tranquility in Uganda, factors that the party believes should continue until a candidate with comparable credentials emerges.

The NRM Secretary General outlined various initiatives aimed at ensuring the continuity of President Museveni’s leadership, including the MK Movement and the newly formed Uganda Patriotic League, both led by Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Additionally, the pressure group Mzee Tova Ku Main has been established to support Museveni’s ongoing leadership.

Todwong emphasized that despite internal disagreements within the party, the primary goal remains securing Museveni’s candidacy. He stated, “These fights are not logical; they are just fights for positions and limited opportunities we have.”

With Todwong’s confirmation, President Museveni’s candidacy for the 2026 elections is now officially endorsed by the NRM, setting the stage for another electoral campaign under his leadership.
