Namibia has made history with the election of its first female president, Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who secured 57.3% of the total valid votes in the presidential race. The victory, announced following the November 27, 2024 election, marks a monumental moment for the country and for women in African politics.
At 72 years old, Nandi-Ndaitwah, a prominent member of Namibia’s ruling SWAPO party, triumphed despite facing a tough challenge from 14 other candidates. Her nearest competitor, Panduleni Itula, leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), garnered 284,186 votes but fell significantly behind Nandi-Ndaitwah’s commanding lead.
This historic win not only solidifies Nandi-Ndaitwah’s place in Namibian history but also underscores the continued dominance of the SWAPO party, which has held power since Namibia gained independence in 1990. However, the election was not without controversy, with opposition parties raising concerns over technical issues during voting. Despite these grievances, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), led by Chairperson Elsie Nghikembua, officially declared Nandi-Ndaitwah as the winner.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s ascension to the presidency is a significant milestone for both Namibia and the African continent. As the first woman to assume the highest office in Namibia, she follows in the footsteps of Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the only other female president in Africa’s history. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory is seen as a step forward in breaking gender barriers in political leadership across the continent.
With Namibia grappling with pressing challenges such as a high cost of living, corruption, and unemployment, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership is expected to play a critical role in shaping the country’s future. Her win not only represents progress for women but also signals a new phase in Namibia’s political journey, one where the pursuit of solutions to these pressing issues will take center stage.
As Namibia enters this new chapter under the leadership of its first female president, the country looks forward to the changes and opportunities Nandi-Ndaitwah will bring to its political landscape.
