The Federal Government has made a passionate appeal to Nigerians living abroad, urging them to return home and play an active role in building a more prosperous nation. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), made the call during a lecture at the 12th Convocation ceremony of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), titled *Diaspora Engagements for National Development*.

Speaking at the event in Ado-Ekiti, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the importance of Nigerians in the diaspora leveraging their global exposure and expertise to address the socio-economic challenges that have hindered the country’s progress. She stressed that the country’s development would not be driven by outsiders but by Nigerians themselves, both at home and abroad.

“Nigerians in the diaspora have excelled in various fields and possess the professional expertise that can be harnessed to drive national growth and development,” Dabiri-Erewa said. She further explained that the government, through NIDCOM, is creating a framework to facilitate and encourage this engagement.Nigerian Government Urges Nigerians Abroad to Return Home and Aid National Development

The NIDCOM Chairman highlighted the abundant opportunities available in Nigeria, appealing to Nigerians abroad to return and contribute their quota. She noted that their collective efforts could serve as a catalyst for sustainable development in the country.

Afe Babalola, Founder of ABUAD, praised Dabiri-Erewa for delivering what he described as a well-researched and impactful lecture. He emphasized that the country’s wealth of human and natural resources should be a source of pride and motivation, particularly for the youth, and discouraged them from seeking greener pastures abroad.

“We have everything we need to succeed. In just 15 years, we have built a university that has been recognized as one of the best in the world and a hospital that is ranked as the top in Africa,” Babalola said. “Our students are the next generation of leaders who will make this country great.”

Babalola’s comments underscored the potential of homegrown talent and the vital role of education and health sectors in national development. He urged Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to stay and help shape a brighter future for the country, rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere.

The convocation ceremony highlighted the achievements of ABUAD in advancing education and healthcare in Nigeria, and both speakers stressed the importance of unity between those in Nigeria and those abroad in the shared mission to foster national progress.
