In a groundbreaking moment for African sports and global Olympic history, Senegal is putting final plans in motion to host the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026—the very first Olympic event to be held on African soil.

Set to kick off on October 31, 2026, Dakar 2026 will welcome 2,700 of the world’s most promising young athletes for two weeks of spirited competition, cultural exchange, and historic milestones. But this isn’t just about sports. It’s about Africa finally taking its place on the Olympic stage—with Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly serving as proud hosts.

The event’s motto, “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates,” captures more than just a slogan. It signals a bold vision: turning a sporting event into a continental celebration and a symbol of transformation for young people across Africa.

A Vision Beyond Medals

Organizers aren’t just thinking about gold medals—they’re thinking about legacy. The Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (YOGOC) has made it clear that these games are for all of Africa. Through sport, they hope to spark new conversations around youth empowerment, unity, and what’s possible when the world sees Africa not just as a participant, but as a host.Senegal Gears Up to Make History as Africa’s First Olympic Host with Dakar 2026 Youth Games

Central to that vision is Teranga, the Senegalese spirit of warmth and hospitality. Dakar 2026 is built around it. Visitors won’t just witness competitions—they’ll feel welcomed, celebrated, and immersed in a unique blend of sport, culture, and hope.

What to Expect at Dakar 2026

A total of 35 International Federations (IFs) will participate, with 25 sports featured in the official competition programme. From athletics and swimming to newer, youth-focused sports like breaking, 3×3 basketball, and skateboarding, the line-up reflects a fresh and dynamic approach.

• And many more…

In addition, 10 more sports—like surfing, karate, golf, and sport climbing—will feature in the engagement programme, allowing youth and fans to interact with these disciplines through activities and digital platforms, even though they won’t be part of the official medal tally.Senegal

A Win for Gender Equality

One of the most significant milestones Dakar 2026 will achieve is full gender equality. With 151 events—72 for men, 72 for women, and seven mixed-gender competitions—the Games will ensure an equal platform for all athletes, setting a new bar for Olympic values of fairness and inclusion.

More Than Just a First

For Senegal, this is more than an event. It’s a statement. The Youth Olympic Games will leave behind upgraded infrastructure, new sporting facilities, and hopefully, a stronger sporting culture across the nation.

And for Africa? Dakar 2026 is a promise that the continent is not just ready—but long overdue—to be seen and celebrated on the Olympic stage.

As the world looks to Dakar, the heartbeat of African youth is getting louder—and it’s ready to lead the way.
