Somalia Completes Its Entry into the East African Community

In a significant step towards regional integration, Somalia has solidified its membership within the East African Community (EAC), marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s economic and diplomatic future.

The formal ratification of the treaty of accession, submitted by Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, to the bloc’s Secretary-General, Peter Mathuki, signifies the country’s full embrace of EAC principles and objectives.

The historic event, which took place at the EAC’s headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, underscores Somalia’s commitment to fostering closer ties with its East African neighbors and leveraging regional cooperation for mutual prosperity.

According to Dr. Mathuki, Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC heralds a new era of collaboration in key areas such as trade facilitation, investment promotion, industrial development, and the free movement of people and services across borders.

With the submission of the ratification instrument, Somalia now embarks on the journey towards active participation in the EAC’s various sectors, including the Common Market, Monetary Union, Political Federation, and Customs Union.

This roadmap for integration will lay the groundwork for Somalia to align its policies and initiatives with those of the broader East African region, fostering synergy and synergy towards common goals.

Speaking on the occasion, Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry emphasized the nation’s commitment to enhancing collaboration with neighboring countries and promoting regional economic and social development through expanded trade, bilateral agreements, and joint initiatives.
