Outrage has engulfed South Africa following the release of a video showing a group of armed plainclothes officers, assigned to protect Deputy President Paul Mashatile, brutally assaulting a man.
The incident occurred on a major highway in Johannesburg, where the officers dragged the man out of a car before subjecting him to a barrage of kicks and stomps, leaving him motionless on the ground. Another individual attempting to shield himself was also targeted by the officers.
The actions of the security officers have intensified the country’s longstanding issue with police brutality.
South Africa’s police protection unit, commonly referred to as the “blue light brigade,” has faced criticism for employing excessive force and driving recklessly on highways, resorting to aggression if other drivers fail to immediately yield to their sirens and blue lights.
Following the video’s circulation, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) launched an investigation into the alleged assault. Meanwhile, Deputy President Mashatile’s office issued a statement emphasizing his disapproval of unnecessary force against unarmed civilians.

However, it remains unclear whether Mashatile was present during the incident or part of the convoy preceding it.
The footage was captured by an unrelated individual in a separate vehicle and later shared on Twitter. After the assault, the officers, belonging to a specialized police unit responsible for safeguarding South African politicians and VIPs, departed the scene in two black SUVs.
The incident has reignited public outcry over police misconduct and raised concerns about the culture of impunity surrounding such actions. Calls for accountability and comprehensive police reform continue to reverberate throughout South Africa.
