A former nurse has been charged with child abuse following a disturbing investigation that revealed three premature babies suffered unexplained fractures at a hospital in Virginia. The case has led to the closure of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, authorities announced.

Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse. The charges stem from incidents that occurred in late November and early December, when three infants in the hospital’s NICU were found with mysterious fractures.

Henrico County Police confirmed that they are investigating the cases and are also reviewing earlier incidents at the same hospital. In the summer of 2023, four infants in the NICU were reported to have suffered injuries, including a newborn with a fractured leg.

One of the earlier cases involved Dominique and Tori Hackey, whose premature baby, Noah, suffered a leg fracture in September 2023. Speaking to WTVR, Dominique recounted the moment they learned of their son’s injury.

“It was kind of discolored. I told the doctor on staff, they did some x-rays, and we determined he had a fracture to his leg,” he said. The situation left the parents distraught and fearful of being wrongly accused. “In my mind, I’m like, I don’t want them to turn it around on us and say we broke his leg or anything like that,” Dominique added.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has temporarily stopped accepting patients into its NICU as a precautionary measure. In a statement released on December 24, the hospital expressed deep concern over the injuries and confirmed its cooperation with the authorities.Suspected White Supremacist Nurse Arrested For Beating and Fracturing Bones of Black Newborn Babies

“We initiated a thorough internal investigation, informed the families, and notified the proper authorities and regulatory agencies,” the hospital said. “We are working collaboratively with them on their investigations.”

The hospital also announced increased security measures and additional safeguards to protect patients in its care.

Henrico County Police have been meticulously examining video footage from the NICU as part of their broader investigation. Detectives are also revisiting the 2023 and 2024 cases to determine whether there are any connections between them and the recent incidents.

Strotman, who graduated as a registered nurse in 2019 according to her social media, was identified as a former employee of the hospital. Specific details about her role at the hospital have not been disclosed.

The hospital stated it was “shocked and saddened” by her arrest.

As authorities continue to investigate, the shocking allegations have left families devastated and raised serious questions about the safety protocols in place at the hospital. The case has also sparked a broader conversation about oversight and accountability in neonatal care.

The next steps in the investigation and legal proceedings will be closely watched as families and the community seek justice for the vulnerable infants harmed under medical care.
