Tanzania and Rwanda are set to enhance their trade and diplomatic relations with the opening of a new border post, marking a significant step towards facilitating easier movement of people and goods between the two countries. The new border point, located in Tanzania’s Kyerwa district within the Kagera Region, aims to alleviate congestion at existing border crossings and foster greater economic cooperation.
During a recent four-day visit to Rwanda, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, announced plans for the new border post, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations. “We want to make it easy for people of the two countries to cross and visit each other,” he stated, underscoring Tanzania’s commitment to expanding business and fostering mutual prosperity.
Minister Makamba highlighted the existing trade projects between Rwanda and Tanzania, including the Rwandan dairy factory in Mwanza, which has opened up new market opportunities for Rwandan milk in Tanzania. Additionally, Rwanda utilizes Tanzania’s broadband infrastructure, demonstrating the collaborative efforts to enhance connectivity and trade facilitation between the two countries.

Echoing Minister Makamba’s sentiments, Rwanda’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Jean Chrysostome Ngabitsinze, expressed optimism about the economic prospects brought forth by the new border post. “A new border post is a good proposition,” he remarked, emphasizing the potential benefits of reduced cargo pressure and enhanced trade efficiency. Minister Ngabitsinze emphasized the importance of collaborative problem-solving and mutual prioritization to improve the livelihoods of citizens in both nations.
The establishment of the new border post is part of a broader strategy to bolster trade ties and address common challenges faced by Rwanda and Tanzania. Harmonization of levies and the resolution of logistical issues for truckers have been identified as key areas of focus to streamline cross-border trade and promote sustainable economic growth. Hu
Despite recent geopolitical tensions stemming from external conflicts, Rwanda and Tanzania remain committed to nurturing their bilateral relations and expanding their economic cooperation. With Tanzania being Rwanda’s second-largest trading partner, both countries are poised to capitalize on their strategic geographic location and historical trade ties to drive regional development and prosperity.
As the new border post becomes operational, it is expected to serve as a vital gateway for enhancing trade, fostering closer people-to-people exchanges, and strengthening the bonds of friendship between Tanzania and Rwanda.
