President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated that the removal of fuel subsidies was a necessary step to safeguard the future of Nigeria’s younger generation. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, the President emphasized his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and long-term national prosperity.
Addressing the committee members, Tinubu underscored that every decision his government makes is aimed at securing a better future for Nigeria’s youth. He argued that the fuel subsidy, which had long drained national resources, needed to be eliminated to pave the way for sustainable development and infrastructural growth.
“Every policy we implement is about tomorrow. When you remove the oil subsidy, you’re not just making a financial decision; you’re securing the future of generations yet unborn. Without that money being wasted, we can focus on investments that truly matter—things like infrastructure, education, and job creation,” Tinubu stated.
The President also acknowledged the challenges young Nigerians face, particularly in relation to the increasing trend of migration, popularly known as “Japa.” He stressed that if the government successfully creates an environment where prosperity thrives, citizens would be more inclined to remain in Nigeria and contribute to its growth.
“Many professionals talk about leaving the country because they feel opportunities are scarce. But if we grow our economy and empower people, they will stay. Nigeria is home. It is our duty to develop, build, and make it a place of opportunity,” he remarked.
“The Economy Has Turned a Corner”
Reflecting on the early days of his administration, Tinubu admitted that the economic landscape initially appeared bleak, but he expressed confidence that the country is now on the path to recovery.

“When we started, it felt like we were drawing water from a dry well. The situation was tough, but today, things are changing. Prices are stabilizing, confidence in our economy is rising, investors are looking our way, and technology is advancing. The opportunities are there, and it’s up to you—the youth—to seize them,” he told the audience.
Tinubu encouraged young Nigerians to actively engage in governance, offering them the platform to voice concerns and contribute solutions. He assured them that his administration is open to ideas that foster national growth.
“Look me in the face and tell me what you think is wrong and how we can fix it. As long as it promotes Nigeria’s prosperity, we will listen and act,” he affirmed.
A Call for Innovation and Agricultural Growth
While inaugurating the National Youth Congress Planning Committee, Tinubu urged the group to explore innovative solutions in technology and agriculture to drive national self-sufficiency.
“Let’s maximize technology, rethink our farming systems, and find ways to empower young entrepreneurs. Our goal is to achieve food sovereignty and create an economy that works for everyone,” he said.
The President concluded by reaffirming his support for youth-led initiatives, calling them the “heartbeat of the nation.”He expressed optimism that with collective effort, Nigeria’s future would be bright.
“I am with you every step of the way. Let’s build the Nigeria we all dream of,” he declared.
