In a bid to bolster Somalia’s security infrastructure and combat the persistent threat of Al Shabaab militants, the United States and Somalia’s government have inked a significant security pact. The agreement, signed during a ceremony in Mogadishu presided over by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, outlines plans for the construction of five military bases strategically located across the country.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) specifies the establishment of military bases in Baidoa, Dhusamareb, Jowhar, Kismayo, and Mogadishu, aimed at strengthening Somalia’s National Army (SNA). These bases will primarily serve as operational hubs for the Danab Brigade, an elite unit of the SNA that has received specialized training from the United States.
Acknowledging the limitations of temporary camps, Phee underscored the importance of providing sustainable infrastructure to enhance the operational readiness and long-term viability of the Danab Brigade. The memorandum outlines plans for the eventual transfer of control over base operations to the SNA upon completion of construction, reflecting a shared commitment to Somalia’s security and sovereignty.
