In anticipation of the 2024 elections, Cameroon has officially concluded its voter registration process. According to an announcement from the Director of Elections, the registration period ended precisely at 2:00 PM local time on Saturday, August 31.
As the deadline loomed, major political parties intensified their efforts to enroll as many eligible voters as possible. Their last-minute push aimed to maximize voter participation, a crucial factor in determining the outcome of the upcoming elections.
In the final days, these parties employed a range of strategies to ensure citizens were registered. Door-to-door campaigns, leaflet distributions, and widespread media and digital outreach were all deployed in an effort to reach Cameroonians aged 20 and above. These efforts reflect the high stakes of the upcoming elections, as both the ruling party and opposition forces understand the critical importance of voter turnout.
The electoral body reported that over 7 million Cameroonians had registered to vote by the close of the registration period. This significant number represents a substantial portion of the population, suggesting a potentially high voter turnout when the country heads to the polls.
