Ethiopian distance runner Zerfe Wondemagegn, known for her prowess in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, has been slapped with a five-year ban for doping violations.
The athlete, who showcased her talent in the Tokyo Olympics and narrowly missed the podium at the world championships last year, admitted to breaking anti-doping regulations after traces of testosterone and EPO were found in her samples.
Wondemagegn’s impressive track record includes an eighth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and a commendable fourth-place performance at the 2023 world championships in Budapest. However, her achievements have been overshadowed by the doping scandal, leading to her disqualification from the Budapest event.

Despite claims of receiving EPO as a medical treatment for severe anemia and a kidney infection, the Athletics Integrity Unit remained resolute in its decision, emphasizing Wondemagegn’s breach of anti-doping rules. The organization disclosed receiving a signed admission from the athlete, further solidifying the case against her.
This incident adds to a string of doping controversies plaguing the world of distance running. Notably, the 2022 world champion in women’s steeplechase, Norah Jeruto, faces a doping hearing in June amidst ongoing appeals by World Athletics. Another blow came with the three-year ban imposed on Kenyan road runner Celestine Chepchirchir, who tested positive for testosterone.
As the sporting world grapples with the repercussions of doping, the case of Zerfe Wondemagegn serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and fair play in athletics.
