In a remarkable performance, Zimbabwe set a new world record for the highest score in men’s T20 international cricket, amassing 344-4 against The Gambia in a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. The game, held in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, saw Zimbabwe outplay their opponents, securing a monumental victory by 290 runs after bowling out The Gambia for just 54.

This record-breaking score shattered the previous mark of 314-3 set by Nepal against Mongolia in Hangzhou, China, last year. Leading the charge for Zimbabwe, Sikandar Raza achieved an unbeaten 133 runs off just 43 balls, reaching his century in a mere 33 balls—making it the second-fastest T20I hundred, equaling Namibia’s Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton. Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan currently holds the record for the fastest T20I century, which he reached in just 27 balls against Cyprus in June.

Raza wasn’t alone in contributing to Zimbabwe’s historic score. Tadiwanashe Marumani added 62 off 19 balls, Clive Madande scored an impressive 53 not out from 17 balls, and Brian Bennett contributed with 50 off 26 balls. Together, they created an explosive lineup that left The Gambia struggling to keep up.Zimbabwe Sets New T20 World Record in Dominant Victory Over Gambia

Zimbabwe’s bowlers were equally dominant. Brandon Mavuta took three wickets for just 10 runs, while Richard Ngarava claimed three for 13, sealing a comprehensive win. This victory also guarantees Zimbabwe’s advancement to the final round of Africa qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Namibia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, and Kenya have also secured their places in the final round, joining Zimbabwe.

For Gambia, the tournament has been challenging. Ranked 95th in the world and a relatively new Associate member of the ICC since 2017, they faced logistical setbacks and struggled to field a team. They made history earlier in the tournament by becoming the first team to forfeit two T20 internationals due to missing games against Rwanda and Seychelles. The Gambia Cricket Association explained the delays were due to “issues with getting the appropriate documentation to enter Kenya,” which caused them to arrive late to the tournament.

As Zimbabwe celebrates this historic achievement, the record serves as a testament to their skill and determination on the path to the 2026 World Cup, while highlighting the challenges newer teams like Gambia face in the evolving landscape of international cricket.
