Indigenous South Africans went to Court, to Stall Amazon Building Development. The Indigenous San and Khoi people went to court to block the construction of the planned African headquarters for online retail giant Amazon. The Opponents said the project will ruin a historically significant riverside site in Cape Town and harm the environment.

The ruling ordered the developers to hold significant meetings with the Khoisan people who are the original owners of the land. In an earlier ruling issued on the 18th of March;  the court acknowledged the basic right to heritage and culture of the indigenous groups of South Africa.

Unfortunately, the Building of the four billion rands (€231 million) complex Amazon Facility is already in progress.

Tania Broughton for Groundup reported that;” The $301 million United States’ development at the River Club site in  Cape Town has been halted; due to a court Ruling and the developers must “consult meaningfully” with all affected people.

What the High Commissioner is saying

The high commissioner of the Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council (GKKITC ) Tauriq Jenkins; said in a statement, “We’re in a situation where a terrain that is so sacred to the people of our country is not just under threat, but being damaged and destroyed as we speak,”. The Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council (GKKITC) is among the groups fighting the project.

The Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council ( GKKITC) previously filed an interdict against the construction along the Liesbeek River. This was in resistance to the First Nations Collective, a fellow group of Khoisan members, who support the initiative.

About a hundred people marched through South Africa’s Cape Town city center to deliver a petition with over 50,000 signatures disputing the proposed Amazon development at the Two Rivers Urban Park.
