Lightning kills four people in Mozambique

Tragedy struck the town of Mogincual in Mozambique’s Nampula province as lightning claimed the lives of four individuals and left three others injured.

The incident occurred amidst heightened concerns over the impending threat of Storm Filipo, prompting authorities to issue alerts for severe thunderstorms in the southern and central provinces.

As Storm Filipo made landfall, the nation braced for potentially devastating consequences, with forecasts suggesting the storm could intensify into a severe tropical storm before dissipating at sea. Already, increased rainfall has been recorded, raising fears of mudslides and other hazardous conditions.

LightningIn response to the looming threat, Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (Inam) issued warnings to boats and vessels, urging them to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of crews and passengers.

The unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with natural disasters in Mozambique, particularly during the rainy and cyclone season, which spans from October to April.

As the nation mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of the lightning strikes, authorities and communities alike remain vigilant in their efforts to mitigate the impact of such calamities on vulnerable populations.
